Mood boards can be a great way to convey your design idea and create the feeling you want your customers to see your brand.

In this article, we’re going to give you some tips for creating one and recommend a couple of different tools that will make this process even easier.

What is a Mood Board?

An inspiration board is a collage that has images and text graphics that centre around a common theme. For brand purposes, the theme will be your brand itself – it can be either your entire brand or a portion of it, like a specific project you’re working on or something you’re getting ready to launch. Inspiration boards can help you focus, provide inspiration and show your customers what your brand stands for. It’s also great to share with the rest of your team so that everyone is on the same page.

4 Tips for Creating a Brand Mood Board

1. Think about the words you’d use to describe your brand.

Make a list of all the words you’d use to describe your brand, then whittle that list down to just three. These are the three words that speak to your brand’s personality the most and they’re also what you’ll refer to time and time again as you create your inspiration board.

2. Choose images that convey meaning.

Think about your words, then choose the images that closely match those words. For example, if one of your words is “outdoors,” your images may be peaceful and scenic or they could be adventurous and exciting.

3. Use Pinterest to find and collect these images.

Pinterest is one of the best places to go to find images and even to create digital inspiration boards. Search for terms that you brainstormed in step 1. You can look for all sorts of images here, including photos, graphic art and fonts. Don’t forget to search terms that are specific to your niche ie modern furniture, food inspo etc. Pinterest may even help you fine tune your brand characteristics even more by suggesting sub-categories to delve into.

4. Lay out the inspiration board in Canva.

While you can keep the inspiration board in Pinterest if you want, using those photos in a custom Canva layout gives you the opportunity to create a mood board. Canva is free to use and there are all sorts of pre-made layouts to choose from. When you’re done, you simply download your design.

One Last Tip

If you’re going to create a mood board – or several – for your brand, limit each mood board to just 20 images max. You can always swap out images now and then as you further define your brand. It’s okay to start with more than 20 images as you gather them, but you’ll want to narrow them down before finalizing your board, just like you did with the list of words that relate to your brand.
